Recall from our reading of Genesis 2:18-23 that God created the woman to be a helper suitable for the man. God did not design men to live a life of isolation. They need a companion and a friend.
In Titus 2:4-5, older women are asked to teach younger women how to love their husbands. The word for love in this passage comes from the Greek word phillio. It is the love shown between best friends. You would think this would come naturally to any wife, but Paul said it needs to be taught.
It is not what you can get out of a marriage that is important, but what you put into it. Jesus said giving is more blessed than receiving (Acts 20:35). The concept of giving goes beyond monetary aid. It reflects the Christian attitude of service to others. The husband brings to the relationship his devotion to his wife, and his wife gives him the companionship he needs.
